McBride - Bumpus Genealogy

The family of Sarah's father, the Martin's, were also among the early settlers. Charles Martin

came to Mercer County (to an area now part of Lawrence Co.) from Westmoreland Co. in the

1790's. He had a soldier's warrant from his Revolutionary war service for 213 acres in Wolf
Creek township. Portions of this land stayed in the family and were eventually owned by
Robert Munson McBride who purchased it from his father - in - law William Martin. The
children of Sarah Martin and Robert McBride were raised on this land.

Sarah had one sibling, a brother named James, who

served in the Union Army (Co. E, 57th Pennsylvania Volunteer

Infantry). He was taken prisoner at Fredericksburg and was

held in Libby prison for a brief time. He later became a Lawyer

and practiced in New Castle. For many years he was the City

Solicitor for New Castle. He died in 1921. He married Almira

Reeder of Edinboro, Erie Co., Pa. - had 1 adopted daughter.
Sarah Jane Martin is the 1st of two children and daughter of
William Martin and Margaret Ann Marshall.

Sarah Martin's grandparents were early also settlers in the area,

like the Armstrong's and her Great Grandfather William McNees

who was in the Revolutionary War. In the Plain Grove by Rev.

McCaslin, the McNees family is mentioned numerous times. If

you want reference pages 31-32, Jane Mcnees at the age of 13,

kept possession of the new homestead with her younger brother
while their father William returned to get the rest of the family.
My grandfather remembered his grandmother ( Sarah Martin )
telling him about how her grandmother Jane encountered

Indians during that homesteading time.

Frank M. McBride

He purchased a farm on the Scrubgrass Road about three miles east of Harlansburg,
        in Lawrence County, Pa., about the year 1860. He later traded that farm to his father-in-law
        for the larger ancestral lands of the Martin family.  Both these lands lie along the banks of
        Martin Run and north of Slippery Rock Creek.  On these lands all of the children of Robert
        M. and Sarah Jane Martin McBride were born and grew up.
Robert M. McBride, in addition to being a sucessful farmer, was a breeder & dealer
        in horses.  In earlier years he had worked as a wagon maker. No doubt this led to his invention
        of the first known ball bearing constructed so it was a complete unit.  It was very similar in
        principle to the present New department unit Bearings, now widely used.  He was granted
        a patent for his invention about the year 1885. About ten years later he gave up farming
        and with his younger brother, Samuel, and others, organized a company to produce the
        bearings and to adapt them to & install them for various uses. One of the first applications
        was in roller coaster cars operating in an amusement park at Rock Point, on the Beaver
        River where it is joined by the Connoquenessing. When one considers how many uses
        have been made of ball and other antifriction bearings since the time 1895 or 1896, it
        would seem that the above venture could not have helped succeeding. The Hyatt Roller
        Bearing, was so widely used by Henry Ford & other early manfacturers of automobiles
        was developed at about the same time. As look backward in history we must conclude
        that while our ancestor, Robert M. McBride, was possessed of mechanical genious &
         imagination, he and those associated with him, lacked the experience to develop and
         sell the idea, for the venture survived only about two years.

After this Robert McBride built up a retail milk distributing business in New Castle.
        He was the first to deliver milk to the customers in bottles. Later he expanded into the
        retail grocery business which he continued until his retirement at the age of 72 years.
He died in the home of his daughter, Mrs. William M. White, and his remains are
        now in Plaingrove Presbyterian Cemetery along with his wife and three of his children.
        In the same cemetery are the remains of his father & mother, Polly Armstrong McBride,
        Alexander McBride, three of his brothers, his wife's father & mother, William & Margret
       (Peggy) Marshal Martin, her grandmother, Jane McNeese Martin, her grandfather and
        grandmother, Joseph and Sarah (maiden name unknown) Marshal and several of her
        other relatives of the McNeese family.
Robert Munson McBride is the 7th child and son of Alexander and Mary Armstrong McBride.
Sarah Jane Martin is the 1st child and daughter of William Martin and Margaret Ann Marshall.
